Old albums, especially the sticky magnetic kind, hold onto photos hard. Please do not peel them out. Pulling a glued photo can tear the paper or lift the image right off the page, and that damage is worse than anything the album has done.

Photograph the photo right there on the page instead. Get the whole print in the frame and do not worry about the album showing around the edges. Our artists crop the page away and clean up any yellow cast the album has left behind, all by hand.

One honest note. If a photo corner or mount covers part of the image, that covered piece was never captured. For a small corner, our artists can usually rebuild it by hand from the surrounding picture. For anything larger, we will tell you plainly what is possible before you owe a thing.

Sometimes an old photo bonds to the glass in its frame, especially after years of humidity or sun. Never pry it loose. Forcing it can peel the image off the paper for good.

The safe answer is to photograph it through the glass. Turn the flash off, move so no window or lamp reflects in the glass, and take the shot straight on. Check the screen before you send it. If you can see a bright streak or your own reflection, shift your position and try again until the shine moves off the faces.

Here is the honest part. Glare is not a stain sitting on top of the picture. Where glare has whited out a detail, that detail is simply not in your photo, and no one can pull it back out of the file. If a small area is lost, our artists can rebuild it by hand from the rest of the image. If glare covers a face, the better fix is a retake with the light moved, and we will tell you so.

Look closely at a newspaper photo and you will see it is made of tiny dots. That is how presses printed pictures, and it means a clipping never held as much detail as a real photograph. Photocopies have their own trouble. They drop the soft middle tones, so faces go flat and shadows fill in.
