Blurry Photo Restoration, Done by Hand

Real American artists sharpen soft, hazy, and slightly out-of-focus photos by hand. We tell you honestly what we can improve and what we cannot.

Some blur can be improved and some cannot. Real artists at MemoryCherish sharpen soft focus, light haze, and gentle motion blur by hand to clarify faces and detail. True heavy blur or badly out-of-focus shots can only be improved so far, and we tell you honestly before you pay. Prices start at $38.

The honest truth about blurry photos

We want to be straight with you from the start. Not every blurry photo can be made sharp. If a photo was badly out of focus when the shutter clicked, or if the camera moved hard during the shot, the fine detail was never recorded. No person and no software can invent detail that was never there.

Here is why that matters. AI "unblur" apps will hand you a crisp face in seconds, but that face is a guess. The app fills in eyes, a nose, and a smile from patterns it has seen elsewhere, not from your actual loved one. It can change the very features you wanted to keep. We will not do that to your family.

So we start with an honest look. If your photo has soft focus, a light haze, or mild blur, there is often real room to improve it. If the blur is severe, we will tell you plainly what we can and cannot do before you spend a cent.

What our artists can genuinely improve

A lot of "blurry" photos are not hopeless at all. They are soft, hazy, or gently out of focus, and a trained eye can bring back a surprising amount of clarity by hand. Here is what we can often help with:

  • Soft focus. Photos that look gentle or slightly fuzzy overall can be carefully sharpened so faces and edges read more clearly.
  • Light haze and cloudiness. A milky film over an old print can be worked back to reveal the image underneath.
  • Mild motion blur. A small camera shake can sometimes be tightened so the subject looks steadier.
  • Faces that are almost there. When the features are present but soft, we can clarify eyes, hair, and expression while staying true to the real person.
  • Detail and contrast. We rebuild definition in clothing, background, and small objects so the whole photo feels crisper and more alive.

Our artists do this the slow way, by hand, watching the real face the whole time. The goal is the person you remember, not a sharper stranger.

Why a human beats an unblur app

Speed is the only thing the apps win on. A filter runs a formula across the whole picture and cannot tell your grandmother's chin from a shadow. When it is unsure, it invents. That is how you end up with a photo that looks sharp but no longer looks like her.

A person works differently. Our artist studies your photo, decides what is truly recoverable, and rebuilds detail with intention. If your grandfather had a scar, a gap in his teeth, or one eyebrow higher than the other, we keep it. Those small things are the whole point of the photo.

We also stay honest about the limit. If a face is too far gone to clarify faithfully, we would rather tell you than fake it. A real memory, gently improved, is worth more than a convincing invention.

How it works and what it costs

Getting started is simple, and you can do it from your kitchen table.

  • Send us the photo. Upload it from home anywhere in the US, or mail the original to us tracked and insured. We handle it with care and send it back.
  • An artist reviews it. We look at the real condition and tell you honestly what we expect to achieve, usually within about 1 to 3 days.
  • You see the result. If something is not right, we revise it for free until you are happy.
  • You only pay when you love it. Every order is backed by our 100 percent money-back guarantee.

Prices start at $38 for the first photo. The price is set by the artist tier you choose, never by how blurry or damaged the photo is. A tough photo does not cost more than an easy one. Local studios often charge $50 to $500 and take longer, which is one reason more than 400,000 families have trusted us, and why we are rated 4.96 out of 5.

When to send it in, and what to expect

If you are not sure whether your photo is worth restoring, send it anyway and ask. We would rather look and give you an honest answer than have you throw away a photo that could have been saved.

Set your expectations by the kind of blur you have. Soft, hazy, and mildly out-of-focus photos usually improve well. Heavily blurred or badly out-of-focus photos can be cleaned up and steadied, but they will not become tack sharp, and we will say so before we begin. Either way, you will know what you are getting, and you will not pay unless you are glad you did.

How to make a clean copy before you send it

If your only copy is soft or blurry, the print itself may be sharper than the photo you take of it. A cleaner starting image gives our artist more real detail to work with. Here are a few simple things you can do at home.

Use soft, even light. Lay the photo flat near a window in the daytime, out of direct sun. Even light from the side shows more detail than a harsh overhead bulb. Turn off your camera flash, since flash usually causes a bright hot spot.

Hold the camera steady, or scan it flat. A shaky hand is a common cause of blur. Rest your elbows on the table, or prop your phone against a stack of books. Tap the screen on the face to help the camera focus, then hold still as it takes the picture. A flatbed scanner is even better if you have one. Scan at a high setting so the fine details come through.

Fill the frame. Get close enough that the photo nearly fills the screen, with a little room around the edges. The more of the frame the photo takes up, the more detail we receive. Keep the camera straight above it, not at an angle.

Watch for glare. Glossy prints and glass frames can catch a shine that hides part of the face. Take the photo out of the frame first if you safely can. Tilt the print slightly or move your light until the shine is gone.

Do not worry about getting this perfect. Send us the best copy you can, and our artist will take it from there. If you would rather, mail us the original and we will handle it with care.

Questions people ask

Can you make a blurry photo completely sharp?
Sometimes, but not always. Soft focus, light haze, and mild blur often clarify well by hand. If a photo was badly out of focus or heavily motion-blurred, the fine detail was never captured, so we can improve it but not make it perfectly sharp. We tell you honestly before you pay.
Do you use AI to unblur photos?
No. Our restoration is done by hand by real American artists. AI unblur apps guess at missing detail and can invent a face that was never in the photo. Our artists rebuild clarity while staying faithful to the real person, keeping the features you actually remember.
Why not just use a free unblur app?
Apps are fast and cheap, but they run a formula and fill in whatever they are unsure about. That often changes faces and adds detail that is not real. A human artist decides what is truly recoverable and keeps your loved one looking like themselves.
How much does it cost to fix a blurry picture?
Prices start at $38 for the first photo. The cost is set by the artist tier you choose, not by how blurry the photo is. Heavy blur does not cost more. You only pay once you are happy with the result.
How long does it take?
Usually about 1 to 3 days once we have your photo. If you would like changes, we revise the work for free until you are happy with it.
What if the photo cannot be improved much?
We will tell you honestly, usually right after our first look. We would rather set clear expectations than promise a sharp result we cannot deliver. And with our 100 percent money-back guarantee, you only pay when you love the result.
Do I have to mail in my original photo?
No. You can upload a photo from home anywhere in the US. If you prefer, you can mail the original to us tracked and insured, and we will return it to you safely. Either way works.
Can you sharpen just the face and leave the rest?
Yes. Faces are usually the most important part, so our artists focus on clarifying eyes, hair, and expression while keeping the real person intact. We can strengthen detail elsewhere too, or focus mainly on the face if that is what matters most to you.
Can you also fix other damage on the same photo?
Yes. Many old photos are blurry and also faded, torn, stained, or discolored. Our artists can work on all of it by hand in the same restoration, and it is still one price based on the artist tier you choose.
Is my photo safe with you?
Yes. If you mail an original, we ship it tracked and insured and return it to you. We are a family-owned company trusted by more than 400,000 families and rated 4.96 out of 5, and we treat every photo like it is our own.
